Jiren

Jiren is a man who is completely committed to justice and never acts on his own desires. He is dedicated to protecting Universe 11 and would even leave the Tournament of Power to return there if necessary. Despite his convictions, he refuses to kill any villains he defeats and instead captures them. Jiren is stoic and serious, rarely speaking more than necessary. He is disciplined, focused, and observant, always watching and studying his environment to better prepare for any new threat. However, he can become visibly rattled when caught off guard or faced with a worthy opponent. Jiren is proud of his strength and refuses to accept help from his comrades even when pressured by an opponent. He shows a great excess of confidence bordering on arrogance, openly declaring that his help is no longer necessary after eliminating Goku and Hit. Jiren’s selfless sense of duty and arrogant demeanor stem from traumatizing losses in his childhood.

Jiren’s personality in the manga is quite different from his anime counterpart, as he exhibits more heroic traits. He is devoted to justice and always acts for the greater good. Jiren’s main goal is to protect Universe 11, and he would leave the tournament to return there if any problems arose. He refuses to participate in the Tournament of Power initially, as he doesn’t want to cause the destruction of other universes to save his own. Jiren never kills any villains he defeats and instead captures them. He also doesn’t like his enemies killing themselves, as shown by his reaction to Android 17’s sacrifice. However, Jiren has a wish that he wants to fulfill, even if it means going against his principles. He enters the tournament to obtain the Super Dragon Balls, but he still prioritizes Universe 11’s safety. His wish is to resurrect his old master Gicchin, who died fighting the one who killed Jiren’s parents. Jiren’s greatest drive is living up to the expectations of his fallen teacher. In Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2, Jiren acts more like a classical superhero who preaches about justice and is far more outspoken than both his anime and manga counterparts. This personality is a side-effect of his self-learning after the Tournament of Power when he threw away his arrogance and lonely behavior, becoming more sociable and friendly to others. In New Parallel Quest 150: “Battle of the Mind,” Jiren (Full Power) finds himself in a strange place where he is confronted by fighters born from his memories alongside the Time Patrol. He recognizes Caulifla (Super Saiyan 2) and Kale (Super Saiyan 2) as the Saiyans from Universe 6 and notes their increased power level, though he later concludes that the Saiyans of Universe 7 are still superior. Jiren confronts Kefla (Super Saiyan) and Hit, realizing he is in a mental realm that creates fighters from his memories and accepts this new trial as a means of getting stronger. After defeating images of Android 17, Ultimate Gohan, and Golden Frieza, Jiren confronts SSGSS Vegeta (Evolved), noting that he has also gotten stronger.
